All ISO is grayed out in the two fully automated modes. Auto ISO can only be selected via menu and when in one of the 6 modes that support it. Matthew Currie , Jun 20, I tried to edit the above message and forgot to hit the "confirm" button, I guess.
The information is not quite right, because, as others note, this is complicated. In the D there are actually two semi-separate "auto" functions that work differently. Once you have done this in the menu, the ISO selector does not include "auto" and you cannot get out of it except through the menu.
The menu includes options for determining the highest ISO it will select, and the shutter speed at which it will do so. When the camera overrides your chosen ISO the speed appears in red in the data display. In the six other special modes not the point and shoot modes where no control exists , you cannot turn "auto" function off at all in the menu. That setting carries over to all the modes involved, and persists until reset.

What I wanted was the capability to set the aperture and shutter and let the ISO vary, within limits, to make the correct exposure, and this is basically exactly what ISO Auto achieves when the camera is set to manual.
So now I often use this approach. Now on a clear day with say my 50mm f1. When taking photo I check in viewfinder and If meter is in centre then I know exposure is correct.
