At least not for long. He drowned when his ship went down. He is most certainly dead. In such cases there is no need to wait any length of time to have a person declared dead. This conceited man had dared to investigate how she could claim the fortune he wanted to marry. I will not do it. He drew himself up tall and straight. He glared at her, convinced she would not pick up that gauntlet.

She glared back, while she quickly calculated how much trouble his removal would create. Potentially a good deal of trouble, she had to admit. Good day, Mr. Nightingale turned on his heel and marched out of the chamber.

Emma rested her head in her hands. Weariness wanted to overwhelm her. So did humiliation at the bold description Mr. Nightingale gave of her faults. He had spoken as if he had even worse ones on the list, and thought limiting it to these had been an example of discretion.

You are on the shelf for a reason. That was certainly true. A tap on the door requested attention. Before she could ask whom the visitor might be, the door swung wide. The Earl of Southwaite strode in with an invisible storm cloud hovering over his dark head.

Exit one handsome, conceited man, and enter another. Southwaite had to know that she did not want to see him. It had been a tiring and trying day, and she was in no mood to match wits with him now. She suppressed the impulse to groan in his face. She rose and made a small curtsy. She forced a smile.

She urged her voice to sound melodic instead of dull. Emma Fairbourne did not appear the least embarrassed to be greeting him, finally. She sat behind the big desk in the storage chamber and smiled brightly. She acted as if he had just tied his horse outside a few minutes ago. I am not accustomed to being cut by someone who is honored, Miss Fairbourne.

I apologize. If you attended the auction, I did not see you. The good wishes and condolences of the patrons absorbed my time and attention. If I had neglected to acknowledge your presence, I do not see how it could be a cut when we have no social connection.

He held up one hand, to stop her. You certainly see me now. I cannot swear by it. I was a little overcome at the time. She had appeared ready to kill him, she was so irate. Her emotional state was why he had put off the reckoning. That had clearly been a mistake. I believe you were working your way up to a lecture. Credit that to my respect for both you and your father. I am one of the owners?. Her characters are outstanding. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger. How I Married a Marquess.

So directly that her gaze seemed to touch his mind. When Emma learns that he is actually a secret partner in the business, she begins to wonder what other secrets her father had. It can continue, but only if it is known to be owned and managed by a man.

To the Duke, With Love. Holding his temper in check, Darius decides to attack on a different front. Clearly the business must be sold. No one will be fooled, however. The title should be at least 4 characters long. I don't understand her reasons for reusing the Earl. She runs an auction house and he owns a stake in the venture. I have to say the author has done some stellar research about the art world! Would love to read the rest of the series!

The Surrender of Miss Fairbourne is a slow-building book, with much more history and depth than most historical romances, and this is the reason it has very mixed reviews.

However, it is one of the few I actually believe. This is a woman who right up until the final pages understands any arrangement with our hero would likely be as a mistress, not a wife. These are people on the ground in the capital, operating in a functioning city, not flitting from one ballroom to the next. The men in this world have the final say in things.

It might make for uncomfortable reading, but I love how Hunter approaches feminism from a different angle, showing how dependent a woman was on marrying a man who would allow her freedoms. Two things that bothered me were the usual Americanisms — a character using snuck nearly gave me an apoplexy! For some reason a lot of sentences finished the same way, and once I noticed it I started becoming annoyed! For example: No one will be fooled, however. She had prayed for it, however. He was a very handsome man, however.

Her judgement left much to be desired, however. He could not really expect an affair, however. There is proof of this in the seesawing reviews. View all 5 comments. May 29, Joelle rated it it was ok. Her plain-speaking plus his curiosity leads to passion. Our Review This review with be short and sweet! First let me say that I really enjoy Miss Hunters books but, I have to ask what happened here? OMG what a sleeper this read was I forced myself to finish it. When I picked out this book I was like something different and looks to be wrought with adventure and cloak and dagger stuff. This book missed the boat for me.

The only positive thing I can say is that I liked the banter between Darius and the Miss Fairbourne that keep things some what interesting. And I found even then that I would have liked to smack the Miss Fairbourne a few times for her stupidness. When I sit down and read a book if you can make me laugh cry, chuckle and few times I have enjoyed the read I don't even mind if the book is somewhat slow going in the beginning as long as it picks up but, I found that none of what I was looking for in a book happen here for me.

May 15, Kay rated it it was ok Shelves: romance. Once again Madeline Hunter has given us a woman of the working or merchant classes, one who has learned her father's art auction business well enough to run the place after he dies. Unfortunately, society and her father's business partner, Darius, the Earl of Southwaite, do not believe that a woman can, or should, run a business.

Things I liked about this book: Usually, Emma does not hold back in telling the earl what she thinks. She and he? Things I did not like about this book I was really unable to read the entire thing straight through : Even though the earl does not approve of her, Emma finds herself succumbing to his smile with tingles all over her body. She is distracted from telling him things by this desire.

She can't sleep, etc. She is a ninny that I did not really like. Because of this I could not really buy the love story between her and Darius. He is fascinated by her forthrightness, but early on he discovers that if he smiles at her she will do what he wants. In fact this tingling starts at the second encounter. Nope, did not buy it. Mar 12, Mary rated it it was amazing. This book has gotten mixed reviews but I loved it.

I liked the hero and heroine and the development of their relationship. I also enjoy this time period in historical romance.

She wants to hold on to the auction house because she believes her brother who disappeared a while before the story begins is still alive and it is his inheritance. Darius wants to sell and move on. Their disagreement leads to an interesting test of wills and hearts.

I believe Ms. Hunter does a good job of accurately portraying the mores of the time and how all the characters would act and react. I would recommend this book and intend to read the next in this series about Lady Cassandra and Lord Ambury who are introduced in this book. Oct 08, R rated it it was ok Shelves: romance , genre-historical-romance. I read this a while ago, and I can actually remember the fact that I found it boring. Which is something, I suppose.

I thought the book had some interesting bits of information, but the main characters were rather forgettable. Some of the secondary characters, on the other hand, seem to have interesting potential.

Handsome Stupid Man and the French woman interested me a lot more. And the ex-friend in old fashioned clothes. Honestly, I remember more about them than the main characters. Can't missing people in romance novels ever really be dead? Then he returned, was annoyingly weak, and I really just hoped for him to die off again. She has a few books I adore, but then quite a few I find boring, as well. Oct 16, J. Rodeo rated it liked it Shelves: erotic , romance. The story began very nicely, and I liked both the male and female protagonists.

It was a about a woman in a traditional and sexist society, who wanted to succeed in running her father's business. Her father's partner tried to stop her, but their conflict ended up bringing them closer together, and eventually both had to make some compromises and sacrifices in order to be able to be with each other.

I did not enjoy the ending very much, though. The female protagonist became passive and malleable to The story began very nicely, and I liked both the male and female protagonists. The female protagonist became passive and malleable towards the end, and eventually just followed orders and became a pawn.

Dec 26, Ilze rated it it was amazing Shelves: 5-star-keepers , madeline-hunter. I read this book originally about 10 years ago and thought it was so-so. But when I re-read it just now I appreciated it a lot more, especially the wonderful main female character Emma Fairbourne.

Even the Regency spy stuff was plausible and fairly interesting, and the use of the fine art auction house as a setting for the story was brilliant, imho. Mar 10, Sidonie rated it it was amazing. This is beautifully written, many layered romance! I thought it was breathtakingly good- almost flawless. One of the rare books I have started giving to my favorite people.

I highly recommend it.
